Admission Information

Prospective Students

If you are admitted to JMU and indicate a preference for a major in the College of Business, you will not automatically be admitted to the College of Business. You must formally apply for admission to the college before majoring in a CoB program. You may submit an application for admission after successfully completing 45 credit hours and while taking the 100- and 200-level B.B.A. courses and their prerequisites.

You must submit this application to apply to the College of Business.

Please refer to the 2007 undergraduate catalogue for a list of the admission standards for students who entered JMU during the 2007 - 2008 academic year.

The following admission standards apply to students who entered JMU fall 2008.  At a minimum, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Complete all 100- and 200-level B.B.A. core courses and their prerequisites.
  • Earn a cumulative grade point average of 2.800 (unrounded) or higher in all courses taken at JMU.
  • Earn no more than two D's, F's, WF's or combination of D's, F's, WF's on the 10 BBA core courses
  • Complete at least 56 but no more than 70 cum credit hours.

Meeting these minimum requirements, however, does not guarantee admission. Final admission decisions are based on resources. The total number of students admitted will be no greater than can be effectively supported with available instructional resources.

Admission to the CoB permits you to enroll in COB 300 and be formally admitted to a major. Some CoB majors may impose standards that exceed those of the CoB. If this is the case, you must meet both the College of Business requirements and the requirements of the major in which you are interested.

The above requirements do not apply to students who are enrolled in the B.S. or B.A. degree program in economics or to those enrolled in the B.S. degree program in quantitative finance.

Current Students

If you are a current JMU student seeking to change your current major to one in the College of Business, you must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.500 or higher on the date you submit a Change or Declaration of Major form, which is available in the offices of all CoB academic programs.

This policy affects students desiring to change their major to one of the following: accounting, computer information systems, economics (B.B.A. degree only), finance, hospitality and tourism management, international business, management, and marketing.

If you are a non-College of Business student desiring to declare a CoB minor, you must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.000 or higher on the date you submit a Declaration of Minor form. This policy applies to the following minors: chinese business studies, computer information systems, economics, and management science. For more information, visit the B.B.A. Web site.

The policy does not apply to first year students or transfer students during their first semester at JMU. This policy does not supersede the 2.800 cumulative grade point average stipulated for enrollment in COB 300 or junior-level courses in CoB major programs, nor does it supersede admission requirements for specific academic programs in the college.
